Summer Thrift Tips

Summer Thrift Tips

Happy Thursday all!

Today we want to share with you some summer thrifting tips!
Ways to make your thrifting experience better and more successful:

  1. Set time aside to thrift! Thrifting takes time and a lot of rifling to find the perfect treasures!

  2. Join the mailing list of local thrift and vintage stores (or join their loyalty program - it’s usually free!). Find out what deals they offer. Usually thrift stores have day deals, week deals, and will sometimes give you a coupon on your birthday!

  3. Remember that summer time means people are cleaning out their closets, moving, and even going through their attics or extra storage. I clean my closet out every summer and donate what I don’t want. Also remember that in the heart of Provo/Orem, UT, students are moving in and out every summer. A lot of them will donate not only clothes, but furniture to their nearest thrift store.

  4. Thrift stores will usually put out their summer donations in the beginning of summer (and same with winter selections in winter!). Most thrift stores save their good summer donations and put it out in their store when the weather turns warmer. So this is a great time to be looking for new swimsuits, sun hats, sandals, and shorts. In the past two months I have had more success in finding short and sandals in my size then ever before! And because most thrift stores have so many summer donations saved from winter, their array of products is amazing!

  5. Know what items are worth fixing. Resoling a shoe is around $20, but not everyone is going to want to spend that money. Always check the soles of shoes before purchasing. Oftentimes clothes have stains or smells; you can’t save them all sadly! Be smart when deciding what items are worth fixing.

  6. Know what items have easy fixes. Sewing on buttons, cutting out shoulder pads, and even hemming a skirt are all easy fixes! Don’t be afraid of buying such items. And don’t be afraid of asking a friend or parent for help in tailoring an article of clothing! I once had a cute little old lady in my neighborhood help me tailor my skirt for free because she felt bad I couldn’t sew ;)

  7. Check out the houseware section for items such as bowls, cups, and lemonade pitchers. Such items are fun to have for a summer BBQ!

  8. Check out the gardening section, gardening in the summer is the best and most of these supplies will be exponentially cheaper.

  9. Keep your eye out for cast iron pans! These are a must for summer camping. Even if the pans looks a little dirty, they are easy to clean and make brand new again!

  10. Try on/out your finds! I hate trying clothes on more than the next person, but trying them on is essential in knowing if you should purchase that item. Remember that different eras and different countries size their clothes differently, so it never hurts to try on before buying. Try out your appliances before purchasing! Ask a store personnel to let you try plugging in your appliance before commiting.

These are just 10 simple summer thrift tips, but we hope it helps!

Buying second hand is a great way to add variety to your closet and home decor, AND AN AMAZING WAY TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT :)

Oh, and last tip!
Don’t be afraid to start looking for new items for Autumn :)
